Q&A: 'Betty's' Salma Hayek

June 19, 2008 |13:27 | Gossips | Interviews  By : Team X

Salma Hayek, executive producer of ABC's "Ugly Betty," recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about her triple-threat career and life as a new mom.

The Hollywood Reporter: Is it challenging to juggle all these roles?

Salma Hayek: It's definitely not easy, but it was hard for me when I was just an actress, and I am glad that it was hard because if it had been easy, I probably wouldn't have tried all those things.

THR: What were some of your goals when you set out to make "Ugly Betty"?

Hayek: I wanted it to be different than anything I was seeing on television. I also wanted Latin people to feel excited and proud that there was something on television that sort of belonged to them, but I wanted the American audience not to feel alienated from it.

THR: What is your production company, Ventanazul, working on right now?

Hayek: We have six or seven projects in development, and I have to tell you, we were really hurt by the writers strike. We're just picking up again right now.

THR: You have acting projects in the works, too: Disney's "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," "Cirque du Freak," "La Banda" and "Keep Coming Back."

Hayek: I was attached to all of these things, but I backed out of all of them except for "Cirque du Freak" because of the pregnancy. I took some time off to focus on the production company and on my personal life.

THR: What advice do you give to women trying to succeed in this business?

Hayek: Follow your heart. Never compare yourself to anyone else. Never put yourself down. Thank yourself for getting you where you are, and never give up. That's a lot of advice, isn't it?

Interviews with Sarah Jessica Parker and Salma Hayek About Guarding Their Kids from the Probing Paparazzi

May 30, 2008 |15:50 | Gossips | Interviews  By : Team X

From teenage paparazzi to steroids in youth sports and even parents who encourage their kids to do ultimate fighting, "20/20" reports on young people who push the envelope for better or worse. Additionally, how young is too young to be the target of the paparazzi? Stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Selma Hayek speak candidly about the constant battle to keep their kids out of the public eye. "How Young Is Too Young?" airs on "20/20," FRIDAY, MAY 30 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Young Paparazzi: Blaine Hewison and Austin Visschedyk have become regulars among Los Angeles' sometimes rough-and-tumble paparazzi... a notable achievement given that the boys are only 15. The teens have established themselves as photographers of the stars, mixing it up with men twice their size and age in the hunt for the big money shots. But is being a paparazzo an appropriate job for a teenager? Elizabeth Vargas reports on the "pint size paparazzi".

Celebrity Baby Photos: Parenthood used to be a private affair for most stars, but celebrity baby photos are now big business. Some stars invite the attention, but others fight to keep the paparazzi away from their children. Deborah Roberts talks to two Hollywood moms, Sarah Jessica Parker and Salma Hayek, about how they handle the constant media frenzy. "I was hounded they are parked outside of your house and they will not move for months, I didn't leave my house for three months," Hayek says after giving birth to her first child last September. "I've become more reclusive."

Sarah Jessica Parker says that, after the birth of her son, "photographers moved into apartments next door to us and we really found ourselves kind of living like a spy movie." She tells Roberts that the constant attention has taken a toll on her son. "It makes him not particularly inclined to take family photos because he has a relationship with the camera that's antagonistic."

Salma Hayek and Valentina Catch a Jet Plane

May 12, 2008 |13:10 | Gossips | Interviews  By : Team X

She’s been laying relatively low ever since giving birth to her daughter Valentina Pinault 8 months back.  But yesterday Salma Hayek was spotted getting ready to fly.

The paparazzi caught up with the “Desperado” actress (and daughter) as she made her way through the terminal at LAX International Airport yesterday afternoon.

It seems that she’ll be spending her first Mother’s Day weekend with Valentina in Boston, as she readies for an appearance at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art on Monday.

Hayek’s fiancé, Francois-Henri Pinault’s company PPR (the parent company for Puma) will be unveiling Puma’s racing yacht at a VIP dinner. And Salma will be named Puma’s godmother for the company’s new boat and its racing team.  Not too shabby!

She said: “I don’t even remember what my life was like before. I can tell you that I don’t sleep. This is a cliché but it’s true. I haven’t slept in the last six months.

“The blessing of having a healthy child, I think is the best thing that can happen to anyone.” The 41-year-old star also dismissed stars who claim they have lost their post-baby pounds simply by breastfeeding, insisting she has had to work out to regain her figure.

Salma added to a US TV show: “I thought, ‘As soon as this baby’s out, I’m just going to lose all the weight super- fast because I'm going to breastfeed and the weight is going to come off.’ “It takes you nine months to get it, and nine months to lose it. I’m proud of what I’ve lost. And the rest is going to go when it's time to go.”

Salma Hayek to new moms: Give yourselves a break

April 16, 2008 |14:12 | Gossips | Interviews  By : Team X

Actress Salma Hayek is pulling an all-nighter many all-nighters, actually as the new mom watches 6-month-old daughter Valentina sleeping.

“Every night, I don't sleep, I watch her,” Hayek said, who added that she's still breast-feeding.

But little Valentina isn't quiet the whole night.

“At some point during the night, she starts cracking up, she just laughs and it makes me so happy,” Hayek said. “Some babies snore, mine laughs.”

The “Frida” actress and “Ugly Betty” executive producer traveled to Chicago last week for the North American launch of One Pack One Vaccine. A joint partnership between UNICEF and Pampers, the initiative provides mothers and newborns in developing countries with tetanus vaccines. For each Pampers product purchased with a blue sticker and campaign name, Pampers will donate one tetanus vaccine. UNICEF aims to eliminate tetanus in 12 African countries in the next two years, and Pampers hopes to provide 50 million vaccines through its North American effort.

“It's very possible that the death toll will become zero,” Hayek said.

Caryl Stern, president and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, said: “There's lots of room for hope but no hope for complacency.”
