Pedro Almodovar seems like the kind of man who knows a real taco is never served with cheese -- unless it's a rajas con crema taco or something along those lines -- and that's probably why he thinks of Salma Hayek as "American" when he's asked about Mexican actresses. Almodovar told Reforma that he knows Salma is the "most well-known" of the Mexican actresses but that he would rather work with a "mexicana, pero bien mexicana" [Mexican, but really Mexican] like Veronica Castro or Maria Rojo:
I don't think of Salma as being any less of a Mexican but she did trade tacos al pastor for Taco Bell when she started making movies like Fools Rush In. And, you know, good for Salma and all (she became super famous and is now married to this rich deadbeat dad -- yay!) but I'll say this: my grandma died loving Maria Rojo and la Vero Castro while knowing absolutely nothing about Salma Hayek. Does that mean anything? Probably not. Still, I'd rather watch Rosa Salvaje reruns instead of putting myself through Wild Wild West.
